Masculinity v/s Feminity

I got this thought during our departmental (Civil Engineering) farewell. After the regulars - mimicry of professors, distribution of mementos and awarding of titles, there was something really very unique. We had an actual, live mujraa!! Yes, and don't just think it was any other ordinary mujraa - it was performed by a boy! (Ed: This is your cue for a hysterical WHAT?!!!!)

Yes, an actual guy, second year Civil Engineering student, performed a mujraa on the stage (in front of all the professors) in full mujraa attire. He had a nude coloured lehenga and
choli, with his midriff showing :-p Y'know it's not a good sight - the thick line of coarse hair between the waistline and the navel - Yecch! And his face covered with a chunni. It was some song from the movie Umraao Jaan.

Anyways, apart from being rather amusing and funny, it made me think - why exactly is this amusing and funny? If a girl would've performed a mujraa we would've been worse than dogs salivating for a chewy bone. Well, in case we were not the IITian breed we would've apreciated the art form.

A sensous dance by a woman, is perceived to be feminine. A woman can express her feminity with a dance, with the way she walks, by crying, by being sensitive, by motherhood, by N number of ways.

How can a man express his masculinity? What's the first thing that comes to your mind? Big muscles? Agression? Fist fights? Is that masculinity? Can there be anything a man does which causes people to say "He's so masculine"?

A woman being feminine suddenly conjures up the image of a delicate female in your mind (atleast in my mind :-) - but what about a masculine man? Atleast my mind goes blank.

What comes to yours?

PS: We eventually made that guy take of the chunni and give his introduction. And yes, the mujraa was truly amazing - probably better than what a girl could've done!

  1. There's something called GENDER STUDIES. What this mujra man did is called CROSS DRESSING. The basics of gender are that gender is not sex. Sexually one may be male or female; but both men and women can have feminine and masculine qualities in varying degrees. These can even transcend the boundaries of sex: in other words, homosexuality.

Neither Feminine nor Masculine are 'bad' terms per se: both have their own advantages and disadvantages. If 'feminine' is delicate + nurturing, then masculine is aggressive + 'protective'. So men fight wars; women are nurses in the army hospital. But if a male soldier puts away the gun if a friend is wounded, and starts looking after the friend, it is a feminine quality.

I saw this post on ragging on your blog, as well as the anti-ragging blog you link to. There too gender is an issue. Ragging per se can be seen as masculine. And even women rag each other.

    1. Homosexuality is a misleading western concept. If it only refers to desire between men -- it has nothing to do with crossing over gender roles/ attributes.

However, gays are not really about men liking men. Instead, they're third genders (males who are feminine) who like men (and they usually seek receptive sex from men, using their anus like vagina, in order to fulfil their inner female). This is different from a man (masculine gendered male) desiring sex with another man (or with a third gender/ gay).

  2. And yes, you might want to have a look at the Wikipedia entry on gender:

  3. Okay girl point of view: Women like 2 kinds of men.
    1. Hunky, muscled, aggressive bla bla like you mentioned. But that's only to feast their eyes upon.
    2. Sensitive (not over sensitive), funny and ofcourse in touch with their muscled side (not in the brain though).
Its weird how preferences change according to situation. Girls usually have crushes on number 1. Girls want to date and be with number 2. Its proven for a fact that girls/women feel more secure around men who are a little more feminine by looks and sensitivity. On the other hand, when you throw in a muscle or two its simply an irresistable add on. All said and done, intelligence is the key. I'll let you in on a secret. If you're intelligent+not so bad looking+a wonderful listener(which involves agreeing and nodding to a lotta things she says) its gonna be = masculinity. Ofcourse a guys take on masculinity would be completely different. If you know what I mean.

  5. Divz:
This duality has been, time and again, proven by research. And it's pretty much same with guys. Really HOT chicks to ogle at and probably flirt around with and nice "normal" girls to have a relationship with!

    :-D

  7. If you really want to understand human gender, masculinity, femininity, sexuality then avoid the western studies anc concepts of these like the plague.

Here is a site that gives you a larger, more Indian and even more natural perspective on masculinity:
