Mumbai food sucks!

This side of the country has the suckiest food... ever. Period. No debate about that. It's not quite south, it's not quite north, it's some random "mash-up" gone horribly wrong!

My pet peeve is that Mumbaikars don't know what a sookha bhaaji means. Go to any wayside restaurant, order a plate of mix veg and you'll get potatoes, peas, and carrots floating around in a red coloured slurry. Order chana masaala, and you get boiled chhole (white coloured chickpea) in the same red coloured gravy. Paneer tikka masaala -- same gravy. Paneer handi -- same. Kadhai paneer -- ditto. Veg Kolhapuri, sounds like an authentic Maharathi dish, but no! Same goddam red curry! And it tastes awful. Yechh!

They make a mess out of North Indian food. Which is sort of understandable. But order any South Indian dish and the accompanying sambhar (which is the thing you need to get right) is a semi sweet, semi solid piece of mess.

Don't even bother trying out the paani-puri at chowpati -- sucks! I've had much better and much cheaper paani-puri in Kanpur. They're called gol-gappas up in the north and they can give the Mumbai paani-puri a run for its money. Fifteen (or twenty) bucks to six pieces seems to be the norm here in Mumbai. Back at IIT Kanpur (in front of Hall 3) we used to have five of them for Rs 2.50! Seriously. And after two years when inflation caugh up, the fellows increased their prices.... to Rs 3.00!

So you're only left with Marathi cuisine. Which, IMHO, is virtually non-existent. The only Marathi thing I've eater here is Missal/Ussal Paav which is not that bad. But, heck, how long can you keep eating dried peas and daal-moth in spicy curry?

The only saving grace in Mumbai is the rasta sandwiches and the rasta bhel. The sandwiches at that price simply ROCK! I'm especially fond of the ones I used to have right ouside Star TV's Mahalaxmi office.

And please don't tell me that I'm eating at the wrong restaurants. Sure, if I go to a swanky restaurant every time I need to eat my lunch, I'll probably get a better deal with the food. But swanky restaurant make not the local cuisine. ITC hotels all around the world are going to serve the same Dal Bhukhari. It's the wayside restaurants, the dhabas, the samosa-cutting corners which make the difference...

I disagree. Marathi cuisine is quite rich and mouth-watering. U should try thalipeeths, puranpolis, modaks, gavakadchya bhajya, kolhapuri non-veg stuff etc etc..

  4. puranpolis is nothing but sweet paratha and modaks is nothing but the ladoos
yet I will not say that mahrashtrian food is bad but yes, it doesnt seem to attract north indian palette too compared to south indian food. (as per my experience with other north indian pals)

But still I suggest that before drawing any conclusion about food esp. in mumbai, one needs to explore a lot.
I did experience my own share of problems but now I have discovered the right places for the right food.

In case you are a devotee of good food, just try the n.indian golgappe wala in bandra, rafiq bhai, who sets his thela every evening (6 - 9 pm) exactly before mount mary church, behind leelavati hospital.

one more thing, don't draw any conculsions about a region's food based upon what its restaurants serve. to draw any conclusions, one needs to taste the food cooked in the homes of the place you are in.

I guess i have exceeded the standard comment length. Hope you will be able to digest the stuff.

  5. Nice article. My suggestions are Maska VadaPav at Mithibai college, Pav Bhaji at Shiv Sagar, Juhu; Sandwitches at Haji Ali, Zunkha Bhakar. You will definitely like these. Keep Exploring!

  6. I suggest going back to Kanpur or which ever backwater town you came from. Bombay food does not like you either!

  7. Thats absolutely correct..

Did you ever get to eat the Chinese food on any of the places on the roadside?

Try eating any Chinese delicacies in Northern India...they are just awful..

    1. First learn some Englsih. (sam usage of leave in 'leave in Maharashtra' and 'leave MH'). And nobody is interested in living in this stinking rut. Its companies that invite us to live and work here, else I'm willing to 'leave' right now).

  13. I read all ur reviews but I do not agree to all of them, I can understand ur situation as being pakka mumbaikar I found Delhi food shitty too. We tend to enjoy the food which we had since childhood so no offence . But unfortunately u landed in all wrong places to taste all the wrong things. Go to the right place to eat right food, and dude u go to Mumbai or Manhattan u have to change ur food habits according to theres. Will u expect ur ‘authentic’ Punjabi and Delhi food if u will go to NewYork ? It’s as simple as that so don’t draw hasty conclusions ells just go back to ur Delhi.

  14. just saw this mate, i think there is more to Bombay cuisine then just north indian etc.

you have places like Moshe, Cafe Basilico, Indigo & Indigo Deli which are spectacular. Then there is Oriental Blossom, China Garden, Tamnak Thai.

i am only naming non-5star places here.

Even for Indian food i have been to plenty where you wouldn't get the gravy complaints. each dish with its own and no they aren't ultra expensive exclusives.

Besides everyone has their interpretation. I once had Pav Bhaji in the North and it was an unmitigated disaster.

  15. It is obvious that the reader has no understanding or sense about food or about Bombay.

Making an idiotic comment like this about Bombay, only shows his ignorance about India, Bombay and Food.

Of all the major cities in India, Bombay is tops in food in any way, shape or form.

  17. I agree about the sweet/sour sambar - it is yuck!! The worst thing is when I am told that is how it should be by a North Indian residing in Mumbai (I am a Tamilian).

About other things I really think you seem to have eaten at all the wrong places. It is not whether the restaurant is swanky or cheap, but just that you probably do not know the places!

My favourite eateries at various points of time:
Dosas outside Nirmala Niketan, tikki chhole at Kailash Parbat at Colaba and all their other chaats, paani puri at Prashant in Thane, jhunka at Tambe's near Thane Station, South Indian platter at Matunga near the Telephone exchange/Post office - forgot the name of the place!

In general you are right that it is more of a concoction rather than a proper recipe. Besides, this is what happens when the crowd gets cosmo:). Bangalore is following suit too!

  18. Hey Retard, you absolutely havent a clue on where you should be eating food.. did you get that? Uh... lemme repeat that.. You sure don't know where to find good food in Mumbai.. Have I made it clear? Tell me a better single city in this world to get all of the following? Manglorean seafood, gaadi chinese, GREAT Udupi dosas, etc (have you even heard of Matunga???), sabudana & batata wadas @ Prakash, Desi Chinese @ 5 Spice, burnyourass spicy Gomantak food, unparalleled Naturals ice cream (that I havent come across here in New York or in Chicago, LA, London, Sydney, Delhi not to mention your Kanpur!). I rest my case.....

  23. I am not a north indian nor a mumbaikar.. however i lived in delhi for a year and mumbai for 2 years

Delhi has delicious Parathas, good subjis, paneer items, and dairy products... but i didnt find nonveg as good as these above mentioned foods..The street food sucks in north except the aloo chat..
In mumbai the street food are very good. be it vadapav, or pani puri. street food is awsome.. regarding the hotel food the article was right. I have experienced that in various hotels as i eat to live from hotels..that really sucks...

one thing thay sucks both in North and Mumbai is Biriyani...any one knows any good biriyani joint in mumbai???
So north indian food wins over mumbai food for main courses and looses for street foods...but if a single winner is there for food betweeb these 2 it will be NORTH INDIAN FOOD..but mumbai food doesnt suck

  27. Agreed completely ..most of the food is expensive ,tasteless and spicy

    ReplyDelete
  28. Maharashtrian food is one of the worst food palette in Indian history almost comparable to the Yak meat eating north east cuisine which still delivers the best with much lesser ingredients but for some strange reason they seem to think otherwise, pathetic..

  29. And you numb-skulls are not good for anything anyway. And actually I did say this in the same words to a so-called Shiv Sainik. But just looking at me he whimpered. So shut up you region biased a** hole.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Agreed. The cuisine is the worst I have tasted in my life. It has no balance, is oily, has a mismatched idea of north, south, Gujrat and I guess Portugese for the breads. I hate the smell it generates and the same color of all its curries. Pani puri with garam chole is the height of everything.., Boss alu try karo usme... And whis is this obsession with mixture poured in curries and calling them side dishes. Dude it should be a mix of veggies or meat...not tomato, onion, chillies and besan made mixtures!!!God I hate the smell. I am getting it now that I am in my office canteen.
